Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

A Test Development Project Engineer is required to perform up to high complexity engineering work.  The types of work performed include project management of test development projects, provides technical leadership to the group, development of test solution quotes, development of test solutions, test crisis support and continuous improvement of core competency.  The Test Development Project Engineer understands Manufacturing Test Strategy from end to end and demonstrates proficiency in more than one area of test development.  I.E.; Custom circuit design, in-circuit or other structural test development, Boundary Scan testing, RF/WiFI, custom software design, Design For Test, multiple technologies, etc…

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Development of test solutions:

  • Typically assigned as the leader on projects of all complexity.
  • Ensures test solution development tasks are done according to budget and schedule commitments from the test solution quotes
  • Assigned to implement new test technologies/philosophies/first of kind projects.
  • Coaches/Mentors junior engineers and technicians on a technical level
  • The tasks comprising a test solution development may include, but are not limited to, Design For Test (DFT), design, assembly, debug, validation, deployment, and emergency support of electrical hardware, mechanical hardware, optical hardware and software.
  • Electrical hardware typically includes, but is not limited to:
  • GPIB, USB and RS-232 controlled equipment
  • PXI and LXI based test equipment
  • Design of custom circuitry implemented in custom circuit boards and cables
  • FPGA/Microcontroller firmware Design, Passive Active filtering, High speed circuitry, RF
    • Mechanical hardware typically includes, but is not limited to:
  • Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) chamber racks
  • Bench-test setups
  • 19” equipment racks
  • Custom automated high-throughput fixtures with probe fields, and top, bottom, and side mounted pneumatically actuated modules.
    • Software and compilers typically includes, but is not limited to:
  • LabWindows/CVI, LabView and TestStand
  • C#, ANSI C and Visual C++
  • Visual Basic
  • Assembly for Motorola and Intel microcontrollers and microprocessors
  • HTML, PERL, ASP and custom scripting languages.
  • Software for Agilent 3070, GenRad ICT and other MDA platforms
    • Test development sites develop solutions for several test processes including, but not limited to:
  • In-Circuit test (ICT) and Manufacturing Defect Analyzer (MDA)
  • Boundary Scan/ JTAG
  • Board-level functional test
  • ESS/HASS
  • System test
    • The process of developing test solutions includes, but is not limited to:
  • Test development (OrCAD, AutoCAD, FabMaster and other software development tools listed above)
  • Project tracking (action items, journals, time entry, milestones, and deliverables checklists)
  • Test solution design guidelines (global fixture specification, schematic design requirements)
  • Design reviews (Initial and post-installation)
  • Documentation package templates (test specification, BOM’s, tester validation, etc…)

Development of test solution quotes:

  • Test solution quotes typically include, but are not limited to:
    • Price and schedule commitment
    • Hardware, Software and Documentation package description (prepared with the aid of technical personnel)
    • Specification of tester validation criteria and required customer deliverables
    • Project management actions and deliverables
  • The process of developing test solution quotes includes, but is not limited to:
    • Use of the automated quote system and quote tools.
    • Completion of quotes on-schedule

Project management responsibilities:

  • Development and maintenance of project plans
    • Collaborates with Test Development Manager on project team selection
    • Assigns/designates  for Projects – Milestones, Commit dates, Task definition and ownership assignment
    • Performs Risk analysis
    • Adjust project plan to meet customer-driven (or customer-approved) changes
      • Changes in customer expectations
      • Changes in the schedule for deliverables needed by the project
  • Update project plan to show the latest status of tasks and milestones
  • Customer relationship development
    • Regular communication of project status
    • Communication of any project plan adjustments
    • Seek out and track changing customer expectations
    • Attend social events with the customer
  • Leadership
    • Total responsibility for project success or failure.
    • Enforce the use of Test Development  tools and systems by engineering team members
    • Make improvements in Test Development tools and systems so future projects are easier
    • Train engineering team members on the purpose and benefits of Test Development tools and systems
    • Redirect engineering team members if their efforts are not achieving project goals
  • Miscellaneous
    • Provide input to the Test Development Manager for annual performance appraisal of engineering team members
    • Project management of several simultaneous test solution developments.
    • Identify individual and team strengths and development needs.
    • Coach and mentor staff to deliver excellence to every internal and external customer.
    • Project plans are based on Test Development quotes and customer expectations.      

Industry recognition:

  • Active membership in one industry recognized professional organizations.
  • Attendance at a minimum of one industry recognized seminar, conference, or consortium.

MANAGEMENT & SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Typically reports to Management.  Direct supervisor job title(s) typically include: TEST DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
  • Job is NOT directly responsible for managing other employees (e.g., hiring/termination and/or pay decisions, performance management).   

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Understands Manufacturing Test Strategy and demonstrates proficiency in more than one area of test development.
  • Thorough knowledge of Test Development areas including structural and functional test, development of Manufacturing Test Specifications and Design For Test Analysis.
  • Vast amounts of hands-on practical knowledge in a test development environment.
  • Strong appreciation and intimate involvement of relevant industry standards and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently provide innovative manufacturing test solutions.
  • Recognized ability to write, create presentations, speak, and to effectively represent GOS Test Development to other Jabil groups, external customers, and technology peer groups in the industry.
  • Must maintain up-to-date knowledge in deployable test technologies as a continuous improvement of core competency.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors degree required in an engineering discipline from a college or university related to a technology field
  • Minimum 8 years experience in a test development environment.
  • Project management certification (PMI) preferred
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience.
